A Local 237 member for 25 years and a shop steward for eight, Syandra D. Turrentine has also been the fire safety director on the job for 20 years, a shop steward and a grievance representative. Turrentine recalls working with President Gregory Floyd as her captain years ago. Less than a year ago, Turrentine lost her home to Hurricane Sandy, but she credits the union with helping her and her family through the challenge. “The union is always there,” says Turrentine, who has a husband, three children and four grandchildren.
Hercules Cornish went to work for the Housing Authority as a caretaker J in 1952 and retired 24 years later as a stores worker. He died the year following this interview, which was conducted in June 1999.
Originally I was from Harlem, but when I came out of the service in 1945 my wife had moved to the Bronx, so I moved there, too. I went to work for the New York City Housing Authority in 1952.
