ASTORIA — Let there be light.

The Ravenswood Houses in Queens will be getting a new $4 million lighting system next year, officials announced, replacing the development's old lights with eco-friendly LED fixtures in an effort to boost security there.

The new lighting will be installed in parking lots, along walkways, above building entrances, at play and sitting areas and on the facades of all 31 buildings in the Astoria complex, according to City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.

Van Bramer has allocated $1.5 million in capital funding for the project since taking office. NYCHA is funding the remaining $2.5 million.

"This project has been a priority for me since the first day I took office. I am proud we were able to secure the necessary funding to make this project a reality," Van Bramer said in a statement.

NYCHA Chair Shola Olatoye said the new lighting will aid in security at the Ravenswood Houses.

"These important upgrades will provide safer and better illuminated building entrances, walkways and recreational areas for the benefit of our residents and the community," she said in a statement.

Installation of the new lighting will start at the beginning of 2015 and is expected to take six months to complete, officials said.
