A who’s who team of powerful New Yorkers has been picked by Mayor de Blasio for an all-out push to win the 2016 Democratic National Convention.
But the mayor’s 101-member DNC host committee reads like a tale of one city, heavy with millionaires and billionaires from banking, business and real estate industries.
The main task of the group will be raising $100 million to put on the political extravaganza at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. De Blasio said $10 million in pledges have already come in.
“With this unprecedented show of support from such a broad cross-section of New Yorkers, we’ll be ready to hit the ground running the moment we’re named the host of the 2016 convention,” de Blasio said in a statement.
“Taken together, today’s announcements show that New York City is both excited and prepared to host a fully-funded convention in all five boroughs to showcase the Democratic nominee for president.”
Among the movers and shakers on the committee are JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Goldman Sachs honcho Lloyd Blankfein, American Express boss Kenneth Chenault and CBS president Les Moonves.
Billionaire entertainment mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg, have also been appointed to the committee as well as hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, actress Cynthia Nixon and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
The mayor has also tapped union leaders to be on the committee, including the presidents of 32BJ SEIU and the New York City Central Labor Council.
New York City is in the running for the convention with Philadelphia, Phoenix, Columbus, Ohio, and Birmingham, Ala.
The Democratic National Committee plans to select the convention city later this year or early in 2015.
In August, the city rolled out the red carpet and welcomed the DNC site-selection team with two marching bands and a Water Taxi ride past the Statue of Liberty. The site-selection team was also treated to lunch at midcourt at Barclays Center and dinner with Broadway stars atop the roof of the Met.
On Wednesday, the de Blasio administration promised “a series of community meetings with key stakeholders to continue efforts to engage the community from the grassroots up.”
A de Blasio spokeswoman declined to provide information on those meetings, or how the $10 million in pledges broke down among host committee members.
