Dozens of school safety agents injured in fights with students

Dozens of city school safety agents were hospitalized after clashes with students in the first three months of the year, according to NYPD data.

Sixty-nine school safety officials suffered injuries after violent disputes on campuses across the city, figures released last week show.

Of those, 40 sustained injuries that were severe enough to require hospital visits, according to the NYPD’s data.

“This is a problem that’s getting worse,” said Greg Floyd, president of the school safety-agents union, Teamsters Local 237.

“Kids are seeing them as targets and they feel like they can get away with this sort of behavior.”

The NYPD also released data on complaints against the agents over the first three months of the year.

Sixty-two complaints were submitted, including 33 for excessive force, 23 for discourtesy, four for foul language and two for abuse of authority, according to the NYPD.

The report notes that 17 of the accused agents have been the subject of prior complaints.

Floyd was dismissive of the accusations, saying complaints are inevitable within charged school environments. “A lot of them have axes to grind,” he said.
