Unions: Fewer School Suspensions Not Proof Conditions Are Safer

Suspensions in city schools have been cut in half since the 2010-2011 school year, according to a report from John Jay College—but that’s because student misbehavior has been swept under the rug, says the union leader who represents School Safety Agents.

The College’s Data Collaborative for Justice tracked suspension data for more than a decade and found that after the number of suspensions jumped 19 percent between 2006 and 2011, it decreased by 49 percent until the 2016-2017 school year.
