The city is staring at a financial crisis that is virtually certain not to be alleviated by Federal action by the time a new budget must be in place July 1.
The Police Department reported that through June 7, there were 153 murders this year, compared to 122 by the same date in 2019, a rise of 20 percent. Shootings were up 22 percent. These statistics are particularly ominous because for close to two months during the coronavirus-caused shutdown of the city, crime dropped, largely because fewer people on the streets reduced opportunities for criminals.
