More than five dozen candidates running for City Council supported the student-led Urban Youth Collaborative’s push for police-free schools, reigniting concern from the leader of the union that represents School Safety Agents that without them schools could be left vulnerable to shootings and other dangerous incidents.
School Safety Agents, who are not armed, have been under NYPD control since 1998. Following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last Memorial Day, protesters across the country advocated for police to be removed from schools, citing concerns over the disproportionate number of black and Latino students who were arrested or received summonses in school. In response to their protests, the City Council established a two-year plan to transition oversight of School Safety Agents from the Police Department to the Department of Education.
