Civilian Unions Support Vaccine Policy, But...

While most civilian-employee unions, including the United Federation of Teachers, supported Mayor de Blasio’s July 26 announcement that city workers must either be vaccinated against coronavirus or get tested weekly starting in mid-September, the other giant municipal-employees union called for the city to negotiate ground rules before implementing the measure.

Five days after announcing those measures for employees at NYC Health + Hospitals and clinical staff at the Department of Health would take effect Aug. 2, the Mayor extended that policy to all municipal workers, including educators. While the policy will kick in for most municipal workers Sept. 13—which will also be the first day of school—city staffers working in congregate and residential settings such as shelters must show proof of vaccination or submit to testing starting Aug. 16.
