$100M hit to Housing

The Housing Authority is about to drop a $100 million bombshell into the city’s budget negotiations, The Post has learned.

Sources said the cash-strapped agency is going to announce plans today to close some of its senior and community centers because of reductions in aid from Washington, including the loss of as much as $60 million to federal sequestration cuts.

One source said the total cuts would exceed $100 million and could result in some workers being furloughed.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said her office was notified of the shortfall “very recently” and has scheduled an emergency hearing tomorrow to get details from the agency’s leaders.

There are 129 community centers and 121 senior centers within the Housing Authority’s developments. About half of the community centers and two-thirds of the senior centers are funded directly by the city.

The timing of the announcement will come just weeks before Mayor Bloomberg and the council are expected to reach agreement on the $70 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2014.
