Floyd: "Saying 'Enough is Enough' is not enough!"

Last week's rally to protest New York City Housing Authority's plan to cut services, programs and jobs as a result of the federal sequestration featured leaders from labor, residents and community groups all denouncing the Authority for mismanagement that left it ill-prepared for funding losses. Coupled with other controversial policies and practices, from the Infill Program to security camera installations, this had speaker after speaker echoing the same sentiments: "Enough Is Enough!"

But, according to Gregory Floyd, President of Teamsters Local 237, "saying 'Enough is Enough' is not really enough!" As Floyd explains: "There are over 600,000 people who live in public housing. Those are people without voices unless they vote. Sure, we need to send a strong message to the next administration that NYCHA is broken...you need to fix it. But you can't send a message from the sidelines. You have to pull that lever on Election Day. If more NYCHA residents vote, they can make a difference for generations to come."

Toward that end, Teamsters Local 237—with 9000 NYCHA workers, one third of whom live in public houses too--will be working with resident associations to assist in registering people to vote in time for the September 10th Primary Election. This non-partisan effort, beginning Monday, July 15, will strive to get residents voter registration forms and deliver them to the Board of Elections by the August 16th deadline.
