Captain Martinez has been a solid Local 237 member since 2002. She enjoys her job and likes being busy. As a supervisor, she meets with new Special Officers to ensure that they understand their benefits and the importance of joining the retirement system as well as encouraging them to be involved with the union.  She recognizes the importance of providing this guidance since she did not have it when first to working for the City.  She values her benefits – describing them as “great” and a “big plus” since few jobs offer such comprehensive coverage. She enjoys reading and the everyday activities of. A devoted daughter, she cares for her elderly father. Ms. Martinez has a sister, Aida Martinez, 3 nieces and one grandniece.

Mildred Powell became a member of Local 237 in 2007. She has been a shop steward for two years and is also a member of the Labor Caucus at Elmhurst Hospital; participating in the Payroll and Security committees. She likes “keeping the place clean for the patients” and feels that her co-workers are like “brothers and sisters.” Ms. Powell is a proud union member.  She is proud to help her co-workers and appreciates and values the great benefits of union membership. Ms. Powell enjoys spending time with her family. Married for 40 years to Donnell Powell, they have two children (Donnell J. Powell and Tiffany J. Maldonado) and grandchildren Brianna (8) and Aiden (2)

Mr. Seda became a member of Local 237 in 1990. He has been shop steward for the guards in the Brentwood School District for two years. Mr. Seda says, “Every day is different and I am always glad to go to work.”  He enjoys working with the students and supervising the other guards.   Regarding union membership, Mr. Seda says, “I like being involved and knowing what’s going on. The benefits are great.” When not working, his first priority is his family.  He also enjoys fishing and working on cars (hot rods!) Born in the Bronx, his family originally hailed from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Married for 25 years to wife, Lourdes, they have 5 daughters.

Ms. Almodovar has been the shop steward for Chelsea/Elliot for a year and enjoys representing members. She became a member of the union in 2006. A self-described “hard worker”, she takes pride in maintaining her buildings.  She says, “I like helping the most – I like to be the person who gives a hand to others.”  She is also grateful for her union benefits.   Her father Eddie Almodovar, a retired NYCHA employee and Teamster retiree (Alfred E. Smith Houses) encouraged her to work for the Housing Authority. Outside of work, Ms. Almodovar enjoys all things athletic. – Basketball, football, and handball to name a few. She also enjoys spending time with her children Xavier (15), Tyler (6) and Joseph (15 months).

Ms. Roldan became a member of Local 237 in 1992.  An active member of the union, she attends all union meetings for the Food Services Workers. For Ms. Roldan, the best thing about her job is working with the members in the kitchen.  In her words, “We are like a family and I enjoy working with the students.” When describing what it means to be a union member, Ms. Roldan says “The union is always there for us when we have any issues.” Outside of work, Ms. Roldan enjoys visiting casinos. Married for 38 years to husband Arthur – they have 3 daughters – Naomi, Vanessa and Yvette.
