Gregory Floyd
President, Local 237 Teamsters
Vice President-at Large, International Brotherhood of Teamsters
As the largest local in the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 237—with nearly 24,000 members—represents a diverse group of public employees in New York City and on Long Island, with job titles that span the spectrum of public service from School Safety Agents to NYCHA Caretakers, Public Hospital Police, and Civil Service Attorneys, to name just a few.
President Gregory Floyd has been a committed and dedicated union member since joining Teamsters Local 237 more than 35 years ago. His strong leadership abilities enabled him to advance from a hospital police officer position to the rank of captain with the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), making him the youngest hospital police captain in HHC’s history.
In 1994, Mr. Floyd was appointed Local 237’s deputy director for peace officer titles by President Carl Haynes, and in 1999 he became director of Local 237’s Citywide Division. In January 2003, Mr. Floyd was elected to serve as trustee on Local 237’s Executive Board. A year later he won election as the union’s secretary-treasurer and was also appointed chief negotiator.
In March 2007, Mr. Floyd was elected to serve as the union’s 5th president and, in October 2009, he was elected to his first full term. In October 2014, Mr. Floyd was overwhelmingly elected to serve another term.
In April 2015, Mr. Floyd was appointed to serve as an International Trustee on the General Executive Board of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). In June of 2016, Mr. Floyd was first elected Vice President-at Large by the General Executive Board of the IBT.
Mr. Floyd also serves as a Trustee on the Board of New York City Employees Retirement Systems (NYCERS)--one of the largest public pension funds in the nation, with assets of $210 billion, and he is the Chair and Founding Board Member of New York Association of Public Employees Retirement Systems (NYPERS). Mr. Floyd is on the Board of Directors of EmblemHealth and on its Compliance Committee.
Additionally, Mr. Floyd is a vice president of the New York State AFL-CIO and the New York City Central Labor Council as well as secretary of the Municipal Labor Committee and the recording secretary of the Executive Board of Teamsters Joint Council 16.
He recently served as a panel member of the Civil Rights Summit hosted by the Walter Mondale School of Law, featuring the former Vice President and other distinguished guests in the fields of government, labor, civil rights and the clergy. Also, Mr. Floyd has been cited by the Institutional Investor as among the “40 most influential people in the battle to decide the future of U.S. pensions.”
In September of 2018, Mr. Floyd was honored by City and State in a special edition recognizing the 50 top labor leaders in New York. Ranked as number 18, it was written about Mr. Floyd that he “has fought proposed reforms to work rules and criticized the mayor’s roadmap…riling against the mayor’s plan to remove metal detectors from some schools.” In December of 2018, City and State media news organization recognized Mr. Floyd again in its “100 Responsible” listing of “elite New Yorkers who are setting new standards of excellence, dedication and leadership in improving their communities and making transformative change.” In 2019, Mr. Floyd was once again ranked among New York City’s most powerful labor leaders by City and State.
In 2019, Mr. Floyd overwhelmingly won re-election as President of Teamsters Local 237. On March 22, 2022, Floyd was sworn in to serve another term Vice President At-Large of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and appointed Assistant Director of the Teamsters Public Services Division.
