A Local 237 member for 24 years, James Alago comes from a Teamster family. His father, William Alago, retired after serving as a hospital police officer at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx. Alago, who is married and works on Roosevelt Island, is proud to be a Teamster. He says “If you need help, just call the Local.”

Local 237 is a family tradition for Ruben Torres, who has 31 years of service. His father, Ruben Torres Sr., retired with 32 years of service, and his brother, Christopher is an active member. Torres, who is married with three adult sons says, the union “looks out for you and your family,” adding “Keep it strong.”

A school safety agent for 25 years, Ernesto Luis Rodriguez has spent the last five years as Explorer Advisor for the Bronx West Command Post 2226. He is committed to the Explorers program and says “We do our best to keep kids off the street.” A member of the Auxiliary Police Ceremonial Unit, Rodriguez has nine siblings, including a twin brother. He also has a daughter and a granddaughter.

A veteran caretaker, Diosdado Rivera began working for NYCHA in 1965. Last July he received the Caretaker of the Year award. A shop steward for more than 10 years, he says “Representing my members gives me a lot of life.” Union membership means “solidarity, protection” and benefits says Rivera, who with his wife of 55 years has five daughters, one son, and 17 grandchildren.

Promoted to sergeant eight months ago, Venes Ramos notes with more than 15 years of service notes “it was a struggle.” She values the protection that union membership provides and his happy to have a job with secure benefits. In addition to doting on her eight nieces and nephews in her spare time, Ramos is also a personal fitness trainer.
