Ms. Szczesny has been a member of Local 237 for 8 years and has served as Shop Steward and Grievance Representative. She has also participated on the Negotiating Committee. She started out working at Kingsbridge as a contracted security guard.

Ms. Ooft has been a member of Local 237 for 25 years and has served as a Shop Steward as well as a Grievance Representative. Ms. Ooft believes union membership is important for the job. She notes that Union members help each other and that the union helps with learning the job, health issues and grievances.

Mr. Robinson has been a member of Local 237 for 5 1/2 years and is an engaged Shop Steward. He started off in the NYC Parks Department before moving to NYCHA. He enjoys his connection to the union. As a Shop Steward, he helps his co-workers through tough situations while educating and guiding them in ways to avoid those situations.

Mr. Newton has been a member of Local 237 for 16 years. He started as a caretaker and worked his way up to Superintendent. For him, being part of the brotherhood is the most rewarding part of union membership. He finds his job very rewarding because he is making a difference in peoples’ lives. “When you make a repair and fix something, you make people smile.” Making life better for the residents makes him smile too.
