b"Is there anything else you'd like to tell me about your work and your time with the union? For the first five years that I worked, I had perfect attendance, never late, never absent. I got a certificate for that.My fifth year, I had to take a couple of days off. But the following year, I picked it back up again and had another fourmore years of perfect attendance. I was blessed with good health throughout my career. When I retired, I had so muchsick and vacation time. Five years before I retired,I took a six-week retirement preparation classes here at the union. I gotmy certificate. So, I'm winding down now. I'm startingto take care of my bills so when I decide to retire, Im ready. WhenI went to the office to retire, [They ask], Why you retiring? I say,That's it, this is my time. [They] say, But no, you got alot of time. What you gonna do? I say: I don't really care, God bless me that I didn't get sick The lady said: No, no, no,this isnt ok. They sent me to the big boss. 1 Police Plaza. He looked at my record, he pulled out records, said, You neveruse sick time. I say , I never was sick. Then I went to my doctor, my doctor said, Look, I can give you three months. I said, No, no, no, I don't work that way. You wouldn't use your vacation time? You were entitled to that.I could use my vacation. The sick time? Why should I say I was sick and I'm not? So, he sent me up to the bigger bossin 1 Police Plaza. He said, You want to retire? Why do you want to retire? I said, Well that's my day. I have been planning it out for five years and I have it written down to this day. He stamped my papers, gave them back to me.[He said], Take this down to the office. You will get pay you for all your vacation time, all sick time. You get everything. Now I understand, you can only accumulate 500 hours sick time. If they paid me or not, it didn't matter. I was just gladthat I had my career. I didn't get hurt, I didn't get sick, I have no animosity with nobody, everybody loves me.\x02Sarah FriersonBoard of Education, Mobile Task Force, School Safety Agent, Level 3Member since 1982The following is an edited version of Sarah Friersons oral history interview from March 23, 2016.
