b"What was the title of your first job?My first job title was Caretaker J Provisional. I cleaned buildings, pick up garbage and cleaned the Housing Authoritygrounds. It's actually like a janitorial job. But with the union, instead of calling them janitorial, they changed titles andthey call them Caretaker Js.Did you continue to work as a janitor or go on to other things within the Housing Authority? After I took my Civil Service, I was promoted, I became Caretaker Truck Driver. When I took the Civil Service test,I became a truck driver automatically because I was already a provisional and I did very well on the test. Since I did verywell on the test, they promoted me right away and I became a Caretaker Truck Driver. And then I was on probation for one year and once I passed my probation, I became permanent truck driver. When you drove the truck, would that be between the housing projects?Every truck driver was assigned to a Project. Mine was Queensbridge. So, what I did was, with my helper, we pickedup the garbage from the tenants instead of the sanitation department. We had truck drivers to do that work. So, I used todrive the truck, pick up the garbage and then take it to the dumps. Queensbridge is one of the largest projects in all fiveboroughs. We had two trucks, but I was the truck driver and I had the seniority. Queensbridge could be one of the oldestprojects. I think that, there's only one project's older than Queensbridge, and it could be Williamsburg.Did you do other jobs within the Housing Authority? With the Housing Authority, I was very involved with the sports and I was well known, because I used to work withthe community centers, with the young children. I was the shop steward that represented the members at QueensbridgeHouses. I was like the communicator as a shop steward, working with the project, representing the members and commu-nicating with the union. I became a shop steward about 1965. I got involved with the union, I will say, from the day thatI got appointed. I got involved with the union, and I became a member of 237. I was a caretaker and a truck driver working out of Queensbridge until I was hired by the union. I became a shop steward because I wanted to get involvedand to make sure that the members and the workers at my location were represented. If they had any problems or anygrievances, I wanted to try to help them as best as I could. They asked me to do that and I was voted in. So, I agreed to doit and I felt that not only helping myself, but helping others at the location. I become the shop steward and thus I becamea liaison with the union and the members. I attended many union meetings. We had rallies, I attended events. We had astrike at one time, which was for one day. I was involved with the strike when we opened up the bridges. The whole citywas paralyzed. I was part of that strike. What was a typical day or week on the job? Typical day, 8 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon, driving from my location, doing all the pickups, doing special assignments, going to the dumps, coming back and that was a whole day that I was doing that. That was atypical day, seven days a week sometimes. The reason for that was because a lot of us, we used to work straight through. And then, you get Monday and Tuesday off.46 "
