b'warehouse. The District Attorney, the FBI and everybody, state and federal governments would come. They would comeand want to check on certain doctors. I say: "What month?"I would tell them where to find it in the warehouse. Sometime I would go there and stay months. We would helpthem find the documents and keep the files organized. Then after seven years, we would destroy the paper records, butnot the tapes. The FBI would be investigating a doctor and making sure the claims were legitimate. Was there anything problematic about the job? When I had to use those computers, I had to start wearing glasses. I had to check those tapes and they were hard tosee. Computers at that time were nothing like what they are today. They\'d only allow us two hours on and an hour and ahalf off because of the strain on your eyes. I finally got off the computer completely. I told them it was bothering my eyes.I spend my time making sure all the paper work was correct. We had about eight or nine different forms for the doctors, depends on what doctor it was. We had to send out forms to the hospitals, too.How long do you think you worked on the computer until you stopped? It was a couple of years that I was on the computer. Then I did more of the form review and sending out forms. You spent the later part of your career working in the shelters.Yeah, I dealt with adult shelters ordering, distributing. What would a typical day or week be at that job?I would come in at seven o\'clock. I would get seven or eight men together because they had to unload trucks. Id askthe guy who worked with the clients to get some men to work. They pay them a nominal fee. I would tell him how manymen I would need that day because I already know how many trucks I\'m expecting to come in. He would send the mendown. Then when the trucks came, they would unload and I would tell them where to put the merchandise. I orderedeverything that a person would need: deodorant, combs, clothes. For the women\'s shelters, I ordered skirts, blouses, tissues. I had to write a requisition, send it downtown to get it okayed. I had a budget but it had to go through downtown. It would be for six months. Summertime, you would order less, wintertime you would order more. Sometimes you wereallowed up to ten percent above or ten percent below budget. Id have to estimate how many supplies were needed. I would order six months, which was hard to do. I just hoped to God that my projections are correct. The amount was settled and then you\'d do weekly deliveries. I didnt have anything to do with the bidding. I would tell them what I needed and how much I\'d need and then they would do the bidding. What does it mean to you to be a union member? That means one thing: you got an organization, you got people behind you. If you are an individual, there are fewthings that you can accomplish individually. You go to the boss; tell him you need a raise and hope he gives it to you. Whenyou have a union, everybody goes to the boss at the same time. He cant favor one worker over another. He cant say: I don\'tlike you, so I\'m not gonna give you a raise. Or, I can fire you for doing this. When you have a union that doesnt happen.Youre protected, you got a whole group, plus an organization behind you. And if you don\'t like it, we can go on strike.
