b"Joe never went in that apartment; he just went and he took the tape off her mouth, and that was it, and he lifted her upon the wall. I just lifted her back up against the wall, and I didn't even untie her or nothing, I just took the tape off so shecould breathe. And the cops came. They made a big deal. After a few days they realized. They had another woman downthere that saw the guy going out of the building giving a description. I guess after that, you wouldn't go in first without the cops.Yeah.No, I'm afraid to go into an apartment. Even when I see a door open. A lady told me: There's a bad smell coming out of that apartment over there, Joe. So, I says: Bad smell I went over and I touched the door the door wasopen and I say: I'm not going in there. I called the supervisor: You have to come up here, I have a door that a tenant'stelling me has smells coming out of, and I'm not opening that door and pushing it open or nothing, until somebody'swith me. And that's how I always did things. Another one jumped out the window. I had permission to take the gates off,she signed to take the window guards off the windows. Luckily, I was in the office when she signed to take the windowguards off, or I would have hung for it. I didn't know she was a little cuckoo. She committed suicide; she jumped out thewindow; she almost hit my friend on his head coming out the ramp. Right away I ran upstairs, the papers were in the office that she signed to have the window guards off. Oh, thank god, I didnt want to be the fault of it.There was something surprising every day. It was very rare to have a normal day; something always came up. I wentalong with the flow, I just talked to the people. They used to even say the only one they wanted in their apartment wasme, they only wanted me with the supervisors: I'm not letting none of these other guys. Joe can come in and he can fixit. Not putting any stars on my back, but I'm saying I never had a bad record in Housing and I never had to call the union.I think the union is great for what they're doing now for me. I've been retired for now eight years now, yeah, its 2010it was eight years in June that I retired and I just hit 65.You were able to retire at a pretty early age. I retired at 57 years old and I was 17 when I went to Housing. I've done 40 years and I was able to pack it in and thatwas it. My brother did only 20 years in Housing; went out as a super. My other brother went out, too, 20 years; he wentout as a maintenance man. And my other brother just retired now. He went out with 30 something years and he justpacked it in.So why did you retire? Well, I just figured it's enough for me now. I was at that age that I said: Let me enjoy a few years that I have left withmy grandkids. That sounds really appealing. Did you ever take a civil service test?Yes, in the beginning of my career, I took the civil service test for maintenance and I passed it. I was a civil servicemaintenance man. But, no more. Every time they told me theres a civil service coming out for assistant super, I said: I dont care, I'm happy where I am. I used to watch the assistant supers, they used to have to go crazy watching everybody: Oh, this guy done this, this guy messed up, this guy I said: I have enough. I go out, I do what I have to do,grab my tickets. Nobody bothers me, I go at my own pace. Why do I have to worry about what you're doing, what you're77 "
