b'How did new titles come into Local 237?Every year, we went through every title in the city to figure out which ones we could organize. I knew DC 37 wasdoing the same thing. They picked up some beauts. We picked up quite a few in there, too. We gave up the court assistants to 37 in return for the cement masons.We spoke to Harry Bernstein [a retired Civil Service Bar Association member] about when the attorneys joined to theTeamsters. Who else was after them?DC 37, Service Employees, CWA [Communications Workers of America]. We had a meeting in the Sanitation Buildingat 120 Worth in the auditorium. All four unions spoke to them about joining. I told them I wanted to be last. So, they allcame and they all made presentation; they had their charts and all that. Then I came up, no tie on, and in my biggest,broadest Teamster style I said, "When all the garbage is over, if you want power, come to us; want to play games, go tothem." When did you go to work for the City of New York?February 2, 1970. I was seventeen.I know you were pretty young then, but had you had another job prior to working for the City of New York?Well, I worked in a warehouse part-time, Sam Roth [sp?] with pots and pans and everything in a warehouse. But I didn\'t stay there that long, not even, say, five or six months. Then I joined a program, Modernization and Housing. Theysent me to school at Metropolitan High School in Smith Houses. I took up maintenance, I took up electricity, carpentry,and general maintenance and plumbing.Were you still in high school?No, I got out of high school and I went to regular trade school back then. That was Modernization. I never finishedhigh school. I went there and I stayed there for over a year going to classes at night. I passed all my classes and they putme in as a maintenance helper. Was this after you joined the union that you started taking this training? No, this was before. It was after I first started taking the training that I heard about 237 and I went right into 237.69 '
