And they told me, you haveto get soiled clothes. I never wore soiled clothes. I had to wait till a payday to go to Modell's. In those days, they were onBroadway and Chambers Street and I bought work clothes. Otherwise, I had no work clothes. Was that the same year that you went to work for the City of New York? Yes. It was my first civil service job. I was 18.18, you were a youngster. Did you have any other jobs prior to working for the city?Yes, I was a jewelry polisher. It's seasonal work, you're very busy during holiday times, then in the summertime youplay Monopoly. I did that since I was 16.What city agency did you work for?New York City Housing Authority, Caretaker J. I worked in Jacob Riis Houses, that's 9th Street and Avenue D, NewYork for eight years. Then the city came out with a training program to become a maintenance man and I passed the test.I was called. It was a three-year program and our salary was not to exceed $4,400. They brought us on locations and themaintenance men that were on the locations were training us. As a caretaker, we were making about $5,200 a year. So, you lost money by taking an advance and there was no overtime in that title. Were you being paid while you were being trained?Yes, but the salary was much lower than what we had been paid. When I finished, I took a practical exam. After thepractical, they gave us a date when we would be made a maintenance man.38 "
